Patricia Malone Johnson

Patricia Carol Malone Johnson was born in Raleigh, NC on October 31, 1941. She was a graduate of Ligon High School (class of 1959) and Shaw University (class of 1963). She began her career as an educator as a teacher at Williston High School in Wilmington, NC. She also taught at Garner Consolidated High School, later leaving the classroom to become an administrator and director for several youth development organizations and agencies in New York, Dover, Delaware and Raleigh dedicated to helping young people achieve educational and career success. Known for her unwavering support for students, especially those facing challenges, she obtained a Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from North Carolina State University (1976) and returned to the Wake County Public Schools as a Guidance Counselor at Sanderson High School in 1980. Feeling the call to effect change systemically, she went on to receive her Master's Degree in Administration and a Principal’s Certification from North Carolina Central University (1990), ultimately becoming an Assistant Principal at Sanderson High School. In 1992, Patricia took on what would become her greatest assignment and joy in education as the Principal of Mary E. Phillips High School. From 1992 to 2005 she graduated approximately 1,000 students who, after receiving their high school diplomas, went on to achieve post-secondary success in college and careers and credited her with "saving their lives." She empowered her students, staff, co-workers, family and friends to overcome obstacles with a saying that epitomized her life: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going!”
Among her peers she was recognized statewide for both her advocacy for students and passion for alternative schools. After a distinguished career spanning four decades as an educator, she retired in 2004 from the Wake County Public School System to spend more time with family, friends and loved ones. A lifelong member of Martin Street Baptist Church, Patricia became a member of Life International in Durham, NC where her son Travis was ordained and installed as an associate pastor in 2009 by Dr. Kingsley Fletcher.
